Evidence based practice is important to us. The Powerfully You curriculum was created for the purposes of bringing together existing interventions that demonstrate efficacy in improving self-regulatory capacity. Those practices include: interoceptive awareness/body focused attention practices, a focus on basic needs (sleep, nutrition, physical activity, and social connectedness), sensorimotor strategies, self compassion practices, and inquiry based thinking. We have combined existing efficacious interventions and created a cohesive program that utilizes child friendly language and graphics. We provide education for the purpose of empowering professionals to use a variety of supports for self-regulation.
A Pilot Study completed in 2019-2020, through the Medical University of South Carolina, utilized the curriculum in a second grade classroom. Pre and post testing procedures in the intervention classroom and a control classroom were used to obtain data. Highlights from this pilot:
Pilot Study Results
Students who participated in the Powerfully You curriculum had significantly less incidents and intensity of problematic behavior in the classroom, as measured by the SESBI-R, following the completion of the curriculum, compared to their behavior before and in comparison to their peers in the control classroom.
Students who completed Powerfully You showed significant increases in social emotional competancies, such as self management, as measured by the DESSA-Mini.
Teacher Feedback
Body Battery gave me a clear and simple (visual) tool to check in with my students in the morning.
The curriculum gave us a common language to identify and discuss behavioral issues that affect learning- is your meter a match for the situation right now? I think having language to identify what was happening helped students deescalate much faster. My student stopped a meltdown pretty quickly compared to previous times and when I asked how she did that she said she remembered that she had the power to change her thoughts! The tool itself was helpful! And the curriculum gave her language to debrief and communicate!
Tools are super helpful, quick to execute, easy for kids to do alone, and are not a distraction to others.
It wasn’t “one more thing on my plate” to plan for and teach. I loved having someone else deliver the instructions. But, it was also very easy for me to connect topics to read aloud and conversations throughout the day to reinforce concepts.
It helped the kids get out of their heads, and tune into their whole body! This shifted the focus from emotions to body sensations.
